Hey everyone! I'm working at a publishing house these days. One that focuses on genre fiction, particularly the surreal, speculative, fantastic, etc. It's called the Metaphysical Circus Press and I'm one of the novel editors. So, seeing as how I know there's a fantastic literary community here, I figured I'd leave a link for you guys to take advantage of if you're looking for a press that provides free, continuous marketing and a larger author percentage of profits than just about anywhere. I hope to see some of you there soon!

Miss Me?

Hello, all!

Long time, no see, and I've greatly missed everyone in the DA community. As anyone who would be getting notified about this journal knows, I archived all of my writing on this site when I started actually getting published, as most publishers aren't terrifically thrilled when their writers' work is available for free online through a third party.

When I archived my work, I told you all that I would let you know when you could read my writing in other places. I've finally gotten to the point where I have enough out there that I'm proud to call my own that I have come back to tell you about it and post some links to where you can see my recent writing. Here goes!

The lovely folks at Quail Bell in Richmond picked up two of my pieces, which you can see on their site here:

Poictesme, where I am currently an editor, has published me in two of their chapbooks:
poictesme.files.wordpress.com/…
Here's the tumblr post of my piece in their 2013 chapbook, though it has a typo not present in the original publication: pwatem.tumblr.com/post/7814237…

If you wanted to throw a few bucks at The Other Herald in New York, I am in issue #53 of their journal. You can find them here: www.otherherald.com/

Last but not least, I have begun e-publishing some pieces that are available to download on the Kindle. My pseudonym for that is V. Ashworth. There's a little something there for everyone, including poetry, fantasy and sci-fi, and even a little erotica. Most of it is earlier efforts, so don't judge :XD: Writers need to eat too!

So there we are! That's my artistic life at the moment. Feel free to poke around, or not. I guess I mostly just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still alive!

How is everyone doing?

EDIT: Also, just released, my collaboration with the very excellent artist Kendall Ewing, published in Weird, the VCU comics anthology:  gumroad.com/l/vEuP

As those of you who follow my work and journals know, I am a young writer just starting to break into the industry and establish myself. I have a couple forthcoming publications for 2012 and have talked to several other publishers about the possibility of more. Unfortunately, though, I have been informed that publishers tend not to be too happy with new writers having material online that they're attempting to get people to pay to read in print, so it has been suggested that I delete my Deviant Art account. I do not wish to do this, since I really love the community here and I've put a lot of hard work into maintaining my account and giving and soliciting feedback. Therefore, I have decided to take advantage of Deviant Art's Deviation Storage Tool and archive my work so that it is no longer available for public viewing.

I will not be deactivating my account at any point and I sincerely hope that this will be a temporary measure only and that in the months or years to come, I will have established myself in the literary field enough that publishers will not care if my work is also available online. Until then, I will continue following the work of my favorite, purely fantastic artists here and I will check my inbox daily, so I can still be reached here if anyone wants to talk or needs advice.

I love you all and can never tell you enough how much you and your art and your feedback mean to me. This community is being mentioned in a dedication page the moment someone publishes a collection or chapbook of my work. I wish you all the best in your artistic endeavors and hope that you'll wish me luck in mine.

Your faithful servant always,
The Paladin

Someone recently sent me a quotation from George R. R. Martin:

"Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines. Why do our dreams become so much smaller when they finally come true?
We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

They can keep their heaven. When I die, I'd sooner go to Middle-Earth."

Thoughts? On one hand, I absolutely agree with his ideas regarding fantasy... but is reality truly as bad as all that? I've personally spent long hours writing atop parking garages and find a certain beauty in the rising towers of industry. (*cough* Orthanc! *cough*)  In addition, all the examples that Martin uses: habaneros, lapis lazuli, wine, silver, strong spices, etc... they exist in real life, but are sometimes just harder to find. We have no Minas Tirith in this world, but we have vessels where humans may live in the midst of the vacuum of space for months at a time, and many of us once dwelt in the sort of castles from which Tolkien took his inspiration. Reality offers us the richness of fantasy, but spread out over the course of a lifetime of experiences rather than concentrated in the time it takes us to read a book. Now... is all this just me being too acclimatized to the modern consensus reality, or is there truth in it?
